Regardless of which processor(s) you choose, these concrete steps reduce the odds of a disruptive fund hold:
- Set clear, honest shipping-time expectations on your product pages — most disputes stem from a customer expecting 3-day shipping and waiting 3 weeks, not from the shipping time itself.
- Respond to every customer inquiry within 24 hours — processors flag unresolved disputes far more than they flag disputes that get resolved quickly by the seller.
- Keep tracking numbers uploaded and visible — an order with no visible tracking is the single most common trigger for a payment hold investigation.
- Consider running two processors in parallel once volume justifies it (e.g. PayPal for buyer trust at checkout, Stripe as backup) so a hold on one doesn’t stop all incoming revenue.
Practical task
Set up at least one payment processor account for your store and run a real test transaction (a small self-purchase, or use the processor’s sandbox/test mode) to confirm the full flow — checkout, confirmation email, and how the payout appears on your end — works before your first real customer does.
