Android Studio is the official IDE for Android development and comes bundled with the Kotlin compiler, an emulator manager, and Gradle (the build system Android projects use).

Setup steps

  1. Download Android Studio from developer.android.com/studio for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux).
  2. Run the installer and accept the default components — this includes the Android SDK, an emulator image, and the SDK command-line tools.
  3. On first launch, the Setup Wizard downloads the latest stable Android SDK platform. This can take several minutes on a fresh install.
  4. Create an Android Virtual Device (AVD) via Device Manager — pick a modern device profile (e.g. Pixel 8) and the latest system image so your emulator behaves like a real, current phone.

Once setup finishes, you should be able to open the Welcome screen and choose New Project.
